Heterosexism

I never realized how many people were homeless due to their sexual orientations. Nothing makes me sicker than hearing that a child’s parents kicked them out because they were homosexual. It’s sad that the moment a child comes out that they’re homosexual, their parents change their views on their child immediately. Obviously most parents are accepting of their child’s sexual orientation no matter what, but in some cases some parents aren’t.  It’s assumed that everyone is born heterosexual and therefore when one is homosexual they are looked at as abnormal. Why should one have to fight for something that they can’t change? In the video Queer Streets it’s amazing what executive director Kate of LBGT does for these homeless homosexuals. It’s too bad that everyone can’t be this accepting. Heterosexism causes those that are homosexual to be insecure and feel hopeless at times. I hate how people have to fight for their sexual orientation if they aren’t straight, everyone should just be accepting. It makes a person no different than if they were straight.  The way people in our Country treat those that are homosexual jeopardizes their life chances. It makes them feel useless and that they can’t get anywhere in life. They are rejected in a lot of places so it makes them feel that they can’t get anywhere so why even try. It’s sad what the dominant groups can do and how badly it can jeopardize a person’s life. It’s not fair one bit to be treated so poorly for something you can’t change. I don’t understand why people get so bothered by homosexuality, it should be seen just as normal as heterosexuality.

  1. It's disgusting to think that someone could actually kick their child out because of their sexual orientation. You've "loved" them for so many years, sometimes 18 years and then suddenly you don't love them anymore? I don't really understand how this can even happen and that's why it's so saddening that this is okay in our society. We need more people in the world like Kate the executive director to help these people out. I think just everyone in general could help out more. Nice post :)
