Advertisements

Before watching these videos I had an idea of how the media portrays masculinity and femininity, but after watching the videos I got a great idea how the media portrays women and men into great detail. It blows my mind how almost every advertisement involves the object they are selling as well as sex. Mainly women are advertised into other products, and it’s not the women themselves but their bodies. In order for a woman to be “sexy” they must be a size 0, have big breast and have perfect skin; no wonder why there are so many eating disorders today. The media mainly criticizes woman’s bodies, men as well but not their body so much, more so their money.

According to the media for a woman to be a woman they must feminine which means being tall, thin, big breasted, perfect skin, etc. For a man to be a man they must be masculine which means being tough with a six pack as well as having money to support their woman.  In almost all advertisements when a man and a woman are involved the man is always tougher, taller, and looking down at the woman while the woman looks up at him all sweet and smiling. The media definitely interprets race and color into their advertisements. When a colored male is involved with a white female, the female is most likely taller looking down on the colored male which represents power.  The media also portrays that when a man has money and high class that they will get a beautiful woman and please her. It’s sad what the media does and how everyone follows it. They make women look degrading, men look scummy, and show who they truly believe are most powerful. It seems today that they have not portrayed a more diverse representation. Women are still perceived as the same image they were way back and men as well. How can we ever grow out of this if it’s been this way for so long and these images are seen to be the ideal images of a person?

  1. I have seen some improvements on the media, even though some people may say that they did it just for comedy relief but I think it's a step forward. Every time a see an ad that shows me the different side of the norm, it makes me laugh in good way though because it's a more interesting approach.

  2. I think women are in a very sticky situation because I truly believe that the only reason women want to be objectified, in regard to wanting attention from men, is to have social acceptance. Its a lonely place to be an outcast because of the way one looks. Its not fair and its not right, but I also feel like the risks of sticking up for ones self are dangerous too. Its a sucky situation.
